CBD Skincare: THE NEW KID ON THE BLOCK

CBD is the latest trend that has taken the skincare industry by storm. Lauded for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, CBD is increasingly being used as a constituent in skincare products.

What is CBD?

CBD, AKA Cannabidiol, is a cannabinoid derived from cannabis plants (like marijuana or hemp). CBD oil is usually extracted from leaves and flowers of the hemp plant, which contains very little THC (TetraHydroCannabinol). Unlike THC, which is the main active constituent of marijuana that gives you a high, CBD is not psychoactive and does not have any mind-altering properties. Hence, it is being greatly vied for its holistic benefits.

Since the 2018 Farm Bill, which legalized cannabinoids derived from Industrial hemp containing less than 0.3% THC, CBD has been used commercially for a number of healthcare benefits, most prominently epilepsy, anxiety, and depression. And now, CBD in skincare is the latest fast-rising trend.

Is CBD Same as Hemp Oil ?

Both are often confused as being one and used interchangeably but CBD oil is not the same as Hemp seed oil. While CBD oil is derived from the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant and is rich in cannabidiol, hemp seed oil, as the name suggests, is derived from hemp seeds and contains trace amounts of CBD. While hemp seed oil is in itself packed with a number of beneficial fatty acids, CBD oil comes with its own set of unique benefits.

CBD oil is increasingly being marketed by skincare brands for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. CBD oil is usually diluted with a carrier oil like coconut or hemp seed oil and is completely safe for use topically on the skin. Since it does not contain psychoactive substances in any significant concentration, you need not be afraid of it giving you a high or any other unwanted psychological effects.

What are the Benefits of CBD?

CBD is safe for topical use on the skin and does not have any unwanted mind-altering side effects. It promises to be a viable and safe treatment for several skin ailments :

  • Fights against acne:Acne is caused by the blocking of your pores by excess sebum production and can be further complicated by inflammation and infection by bacteria. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, CBD oil has been found to be very beneficial in treating acne. Additionally, CBD also decreases sebum production, and hence directly prevents the development of acne and breakouts.
  • Anti-aging effects:CBD has significant antioxidant properties, and fights against free radicals to prevent signs of aging on your skin. It has been found beneficial in preventing wrinkles and fine lines. It also improves skin tone and helps give a smooth, youthful texture to your skin.
  • Good for Sensitive skin:Due to its anti-inflammatory properties and soothing effect on the skin, CBD helps decrease redness and inflammation of the skin.
  • Treats skin ailments:Recent research indicates that CBD may be beneficial in eczema, rosacea, and even psoriasis.

CBD is the elixir your skin needs. People over the world are embracing the wholesome benefits of CBD, and it is being used by the skincare and wellness industry in many forms, including creams, lotions and even face masks.
